Khon Kaen. After an evening exploring this enormous hotel, I discovered a night market and then a large shopping mall the next day. Then, I had dinner with my pen pal Piyaporn Yui from Khon Kaen and her husband; it was very pleasant. End of the northern leg of my journey, and I continued south on the first flight...
Some dreams are harder to understand, and to achieve, than a simple trip… There have been,
The 7 Wonders of the World, The 6 Disney Parks, and now, here are the 5 Asian weddings… The 5.0 WAP (Wedding in Asia Project) is driven by a desire to return to what I've always dreamed of: traditions, ceremony, and the beauty of different cultures. 5.0 for my 50th birthday, 5.0 because it's a journey of no fewer than 5 weddings to experience in several Asian countries (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, and the Philippines). Months of meticulous organization and preparation to realize my dream of many years.
The first part took me from the north to the south of Thailand. Its name, "Rak Khoun," is a Thai word meaning "I love you." My dream begins here…

This time, it was a road trip that started with waking up by the pool, followed by a crazy mountain drive. Between the permitted U-turns on the highway, the "Beware of Elephants" signs, the trucks with seven meters of straw, the GPS malfunctioning (I had to pull out the map!), and driving on the left, everything was just fine!
I visited a large mountain temple whose name I've forgotten and the majestic waterfall park, which I'd discovered on social media. In fact, taking a selfie under the waterfall was so complicated (I only had 10 seconds to run and position myself underneath) that I had to ask other tourists!
Having already visited Chiang Rai two years prior, this time I ventured outside the city and visited the three mountain temples. One of them particularly moved me; I felt so peaceful there. I stayed for a while, and when I tried to film the atmosphere, the statue started flashing! (No problem with the camera). It reminds me of the Buddha curse I experienced during my trip to China (the 2016 CRIC China Russia India Cambodia project, which you read about previously). I then went up to the 26th floor, inside the Buddha itself, to look through its eye!
Then I headed north towards the Burmese border to see the northernmost point of Thailand, and even though I couldn't go in, it was impressive to see the constant coming and going there (the Golden Triangle area). I even parked on 'Walking Street' (spot the mistake!).

Back to Chiang Mai to rediscover the calm and serenity of northern Thailand, its traditional side, and thankfully, the small number of "farang" (tourists). A visit to new temples, such as the Silver Temple, forbidden to women due to an ancient, forgotten belief, and the end of the day in a large shopping mall.

After a final night in Chiang Rai, I flew to Bangkok and then on to Udon Thani. I visited two cities in the northeast. Udon Thani was calm but very pleasant, bringing back a flood of memories. Not to mention two drinks in a bar shaped like a phallus and a naked woman, which gave me a good laugh. Then I rented another car to head south, stopping at the Red Lotus Lake, which was a lovely visit. I also stopped at a small local village market before arriving at the 18th floor of a luxury hotel in Khon Kaen. These were the last cities in the north before heading south, all while slowly preparing the grand finale of this project...

Krabi is an incredible place where I had the chance to try a day/night kayaking experience (a big shout-out to my Vietnamese pen pal whom I also met on a kayaking trip) to discover bioluminescent plankton. Quite an adventure with breathtaking scenery! (Thank you, Laurent Henry, for this gift). In the evening, there was a fire show on the beach. Then, a change of hotel to a secluded spot in the jungle, a truly idyllic setting that almost inspired me to create a chain dedicated to discovering luxury hotels!
Hong Kong.

Phuket. Unfortunately, no luck in Phuket where the Buddha on the mountain was under renovation and night fell far too quickly...on what was already a very eventful evening. Then, after an evening at Hooters, I left Phuket, adding another meal to my collection, and arrived in Pattaya later that evening.

Koh Phi Phi, the incredible island. An island lost in the middle of the ocean in a sublime setting of long-pole boats and a totally offbeat atmosphere. After a night of debauchery on Koh Phi Phi, where girls jump over flaming ropes, take pictures in front of a giant phallus, and where men sniff balloons filled with laughing gas and eat cannabis pizzas, it was time for me to leave the island and head for Phuket…

It was in Pattaya that I was able to fulfill another old dream: to take to the skies myself, but in my own way, in a 1940 Boeing Stearman... A World War II aircraft that gave me an aerial tour of the city, where I caught a glimpse of the legendary "Sanctuary of Truth" from above—a truly exhilarating moment! It was time to return to Bangkok…
Pattaya. A city full of memories with amazing shops like my favorite Terminal 21, but also its completely crazy "walking street" (where I even proposed at midnight on New Year's Eve...) not forgetting its beach of course and an incredible hotel as the cherry on top....
The first wedding in the series (out of 5), here in Thailand, the grand finale of the 5.0 W.A.P. project. A truly magical moment with a genuine traditional ceremony at the Marble Temple in the purest Thai style. A water blessing, candle lighting, and forehead marking to the sound of traditional songs marked this unforgettable day.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Pinder Tours for all the wedding arrangements, and also Pony's (the bride's) wonderful husband for accompanying her and me throughout the ceremony. My dream came true today, thanks to Princess Pony, who holds a very special and symbolic place in my heart. I met Pony eight years ago. I proposed to her at midnight on New Year's Eve in the middle of Walking Street in Pattaya. The entire street applauded. I even created a photo album documenting her birth and our meeting, which she still cherishes. She was the one and only woman in Thailand I wanted on my arm here.
It was a magical day…

A visit to the Erawan Museum, which was missing from my list and absolutely blew me away, followed by a climb to the 340-meter-high Mahanakhon Tower. Then, I finished with visits to two enormous shopping malls, Icon Siam and Terminal 21, before returning to a superb hotel in the city. A detour through the vast Lumphini Park followed, and in the evening, I explored Chocolate City, which I'd also discovered on social media as a magical Christmas wonderland that's open year-round! A truly magical evening before the big event the next day…
